We are all caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied into a single garment of destiny.
~Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The forces that change history are the same as those that change the heart of men.
~Fr. Giussani

The Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., a Baptist minister, and son of a Baptist minister, first came to the attention of the American people when he led the Montgomery bus boycotts in 1955. Eventually becoming the visible spokesperson and leader of the Civil Rights Movement, King led the struggle against segregation, racial inequality and for voting rights for African Americans in the 1950s and 60s, becoming a touchstone for the moral conscience of the nation, until his assassination at age 39 in 1968.  Through the use of images, text, oral histories and slave narratives, live music, and dance, the presentation, A Single Garment of Destiny, will contextualize the historical struggles of African Americans and highlight Dr. King’s rootedness in the Christian conception of man and his insistence on “Love as the only force capable of transforming an enemy to a friend.” We will explore how the black Christian church in America shaped King's work, and how King’s life impacted those who followed him in the Civil Rights Movement and the American people as a whole, as we continue to hope for that "Impossible Unity" glimpsed in the work and words of Martin Luther King.
