“The beauty of it smote his heart … and hope returned to him” (J.R.R. Tolkien)

A presentation on hope in the work of J.R.R. Tolkien with Michael Drout, Professor of English, Wheaton College, Corey Olsen, President of Signum University and Mythgard Institute, and Giuseppe Pezzini, Associate Professor of Latin Language and Literature, Oxford University, moderated by Annie Thompson, Teaching Fellow, St. John's College

The 2025 Encounter explores how memory and hope, rekindled by the encounter with great love,  can shape our daily lives. Hope is a recurring, resplendent thread woven throughout John R.R. Tolkien’s tales via both people and places, colorful characters, and carefully crafted situations, for instance, Sam seeing a solo star blinking in the dark night in The Return of the King, Book 6, Chapter 2. Speakers love and are very familiar with Tolkien, and their conversation will help the audience appreciate a fascinating aspect of the great British author.
