Martin Nowak
Martin Nowak is Professor of Mathematics and of Biology at Harvard University. He is a leading researcher in the fields of evolutionary biology and mathematical biology. Martin has established cooperation as the third fundamental principle of evolution, besides mutation and selection. His work has helped to create diverse fields such as evolutionary dynamics, virus dynamics, mathematical oncology, and the evolution of cooperation. He has published more than 500 papers, many of them in top journals such as Nature and Science, and six books.
Martin has studied at the University of Vienna. Before coming to Harvard in 2003, he held professorships at the University of Oxford and at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. For many years, Martin, who is Roman Catholic, has also been working at the interface of Science and Religion. The Catholic Church has invited him twice to Rome to speak on evolution. In 2015, he received an honorary degree from the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology at Berkeley. Martin is an engaging speaker who has given numerous public lectures for diverse audiences.
Martin's most recent books, BEYOND and WITHIN, are poetic explorations of some of the deepest questions that arise at the interface of science, philosophy, and religion. They are moving attempts to argue for a worldview where science and religion join forces in leading us to God.
